Atlantis - 2085
The world was a wreck. Most of the heroes were dead. Darkseid ruled the surface with an iron hand. Atlantis was Wonder Woman’s last sanctuary, the world’s last haven of freedom. Diana was tired of running, now was the time to make a stand.
She put on her armour, forged in the fires of Atlantis and picked up her lance. Looped on the bed was the final piece of her gear, the Lasso of Truth. She picked it up and wrapped it round her waist. The lasso had been with her since the war had begun, now it had one final job to do. Darkseid’s defeat.
Aquaman entered the room. She’d known his grandfather, the original Aquaman.
“My love, do you have to do this?” he said.
“No-one else will. I have to fight him. I have to try. Don’t try and stop me.”
“Very well, then at least take this.”
He held out a black tube.
“What is it?” asked Diana.
“This is the soul absorber. Attach it to your lasso and wrap it around Darkseid. It might give you a chance of hurting him. Beware though. The absorber is very powerful but dangerous. In the wrong hands it gives the wielder the power to drain a pure soul. What remains will be a soulless husk, compassionless and evil.”
“There aren’t many pure souls left in this world I’m afraid, thank you my darling,” she said, slipping the tube onto the handle of her lasso. It fit precisely as if it were made for it.
She grabbed Aquaman and pulled him in for a deep kiss then pushed him away. This was no time for emotions. It was time to hunt.
Gotham - 2085
Darkseid wasn’t hidden. He had built a huge Apokalyptian fortress in Central Park. It’s doors sat open, as if he was waiting for Diana. She stepped through the empty halls, eerily quiet, until she reached the main throneroom. There he was, sat on his throne. As always his bitch minion Kara was by his side. Once the purest heroine, Supergirl had seen the tides turning and switched sides, forming a pact of evil. Now she was as twisted and corrupt as he. She turned and saw Diana.
“Oh my, a new plaything! Can I keep her?” she squealed.
“We shall see my child. We shall see,” boomed Darkseid. “At last the last living Amazon shows her face. Diana, have you come to surrender? You would make a fine addition to my hareem.”
“Oh she would wouldn’t she?” said Kara, slowly licking her lips.
“I’m here to end you Darkseid, not join you.”
“Indeed, and I see you are wearing Atlantean armour. Let’s get that out of the way first. Aquaseid, deal with her clothing.”
Out of the shadows stepped the woman who had once been Aquaman’s wife. Her eyes were inky black pools. Decades of torture and manipulation at Darkseid’s hands had stripped her soul, leaving a wicked husk in her place. She raised her hands and to Diana’s surprise the armour flew from Diana’s body. The lance flew from her hand and embedded in the wall.
“You come at the perfect moment Princess. You will witness my domination of the one thing left untouched by my hand. The past.”
He waved his hand at a glowing portal to one side of his throne.
“I think I will visit you first my dear,” he said, tapping a few controls on a device on his wrist.
“Damn you Darkseid. I’ll destroy you,” screamed Diana, unfurling her last hope, the lasso. She leapt at him, batting Kara out of the way.
Darkseid stood and caught her mid flight, gripping her by the neck. “You are a fly to me. You are nothing, and this has no effect, I never lie, why would I need to,” he grabbed the lasso from her hand. The handle of the lasso suddenly started to glow red in his hand. Blackness spread along the handle and then down the cord until the lasso resembled more of a whip. Darkseid screamed but couldn’t let go. His huge bulk began to shrink, fire forming behind his eyes as his soul was sucked out of his body and absorbed into the lasso. With an almighty scream he threw the lasso, which went flying through the open portal. Diana plucked the lance out of the wall and walked up to Darkseid’s prostate body. He lay on the floor writhing in agony.
“Time to die,” hissed Wonder Woman as she drove the lance through his skull. Next she swung the lance with all her might, shattering the time device and destroying the portal. Diana dropped the lance, it was all over, he was dead.
Supergirl stood smiling at Diana. “Thank you Diana. You have done what I never could. Darkseid is dead.”
“Kara, I’m so glad. Now you can throw off his influence and help me rebuild the world.”
“Actually Diana, I had other thoughts.” Supergirl nodded at a figure stood in the shadows. Before Diana had a chance to react the armoured figure stepped out from behind a pillar and drove a glowing sword through her chest.
Diana collapsed to the floor, clutching her chest, feeling her life ebbing away. Kara stood over her, her eyes glowing red.
“You may have killed Darkseid, but you have failed to save the world. Now I will rule in his place,” hissed the corrupted Kryptonian before twin beams of red blasted from her eyes into Diana’s forehead, ending her life forever.
Kara glanced at the extinguished portal.
“Guard, turn that back on.”
The guard who had stabbed Diana looked to the ground sheepishly. “I’m afraid that’s impossible. Darkseid drained most of the earth’s energy just to open it. There’s no way to do it again. There’s no way back.”
“Very well,” said Kara, pushing Darkseid’s corpse off his throne and taking the seat herself. “You did well today. Now come here and receive your reward. The guard walked towards her and Kara shot beams from her eyes, directly at the straps of his armour. By the time he reached the throne he was completely naked.
